Lionel Messi and Barcelona have been eliminated from Champions League play. The Argentinian forward is reportedly paid the U.S. equivalent of $667,000 per week and, for that price, he should be getting better results than failing to help Barcelona win the Champions League the last three tries. Still, Messi has scored the most goals in Barcelona and La Liga history, and fans argue he deserves every penny he gets. What do you think? ⚽

Messi may not have won a lot of major titles last year, but he still deserves to be the highest paid player in La Liga. Messi led Spain’s top league with 37 goals, nine more than the next best athlete.

Goal scoring isn’t the only way he contributes. Messi draws a lot of attention from defenders, opening things up for his teammates to swoop in and get goals themselves. He makes the players around him better, helping Luis Suarez and Neymar finish with 28 and 13 goals, respectively.

The Argentinian forward just turned 30 and has plenty left in the tank to improve on his numbers, and lead Barcelona to even more titles. So far, he has broken most of Barcelona’s goal-scoring records, been a part of seven La Liga title-winning teams at Barcelona, and helped the club win four Champions League titles.

With a laundry list of prestigious titles, Messi deserves every bit of money he has earned.

Messi has accomplished a lot, but what has he done lately?

Sure, Barcelona is in position to win La Liga this year, but they were eliminated by Roma in this year's Champions League knockout stage and barely escaped the Round of 16 in the Champions League last season. Yeah, Messi scored a lot of goals, but those numbers are pointless unless the team wins major titles.

Everyone gives credit to Messi for Barcelona’s success, but he benefits from having skilled players running with him. Maybe those resources can be spread to players who are trending the right direction instead of Messi, who is only aging more.
