The early returns on Shohei Ohtani have been magnificent. Not only has he been a dominant pitcher in two games, he has been a menace at the plate. Many think Ohtani will be the next superstar in the league with his hard pitches and a fast bat. Still, MLB is littered with the careers of Japanese players who couldn’t cut it in the Majors. What do you think? ⚾

Armed with a 100 mph fastball and powerful bat, Ohtani is set to be the biggest Japanese star in MLB since Ichiro Suzuki. He finished his five-year Nippon Professional Baseball career with a .500 slugging percentage, and 2.52 ERA. Since starting in the MLB, he has three home runs and two wins with 18 strikeouts. Ohtani is the next big star.

Every couple of years, there is a talented Japanese player that dominates the NPB and is expected to translate his production to the Majors. Like clockwork, most of these players don't live up to the hype. Ohtani might be the newest face on the scene, but that doesn't mean he will automatically be a future all-star. There is a lot of pressure for him to perform, and there is no way he can handle that many eyes on him. He will probably crumble under expectations.
