The Pentagon confirmed in a statement that it would pay for a transgender soldier's gender reassignment surgery for the first time. Many applauded the Pentagon's decision—if an individual chooses to fight for our country, the least we can do is pay their medical bills. But others argue taxpayer dollars shouldn't cover surgeries they contend are "elective," and believe the military is no place for social experimentation. What do you think?

The Pentagon confirmed it would pay for a transgender soldier's gender reassignment surgery. President Trump issued a memo to bar transgender individuals from enlisting in the military back in August, but a federal court partially blocked the ban last year.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in a statement shared by a BuzzFeed News reporter that an active-duty military member received sex-reassignment surgery Tuesday in a private hospital.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley applauded the Pentagon's decision, claiming we all "took an oath" to defend the Constitution.

“We all, everyone in uniform, we took an oath; we took an oath of allegiance to the Constitution... And embedded within that Constitution is an idea, and it’s an idea that says you and I, no matter whether you’re male or female, gay or straight or anything else, whether you’re black or you’re white or whether you’re Protestant or you’re Catholic or you’re Jew or you’re Muslim or you don’t believe at all, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor or famous — it doesn’t matter. None of that matters."
“And that’s what we adhere to in the military. It’s a meritocracy in the military. It’s based on standards," he continued. "If you meet the standard, great. If you don’t, then thank you very much for your interest and do something else."

Some are outraged taxpayer dollars are going toward gender reassignment procedures they deem "elective" and not "medically necessary."

But others are applauding the decision. Transgender troops put their lives on the line every day to protect our country, the least we can do is cover their medical expenses.
