House Speaker Paul Ryan (WI-R) said he would not seek reelection in 2018 because he wants to spend more time with his family. His critics say Ryan should resign immediately. He's a lame duck leader who's presiding over a House of Representatives that is unlikely to pass major legislation with midterm elections looming. But others say Ryan still has a lot left to do to lead Republicans through the midterm elections. He should finish his term. What do you think? 👨🏻‍⚖️

Congressional Republicans have been running flack for President Trump since day one. Ryan has been widely criticized for staying silent or looking the other way when Trump's worst tendencies emerge. The Trump administration is an unqualified dumpster fire. Ryan should get away while he can.

Trump supporters want him out too. Fox News' Lou Dobbs plainly said Ryan should "get out of the way." Ryan was seen as an impediment to Trump's agenda.

Not seeking reelection is materially different than resigning. Paul Ryan says he won't run again but that doesn't mean he has nothing left to do. Resigning immediately would create a power vacuum, which would add more chaos to an already insane time.

Ryan could join the ranks of other Republicans like Sen. Jeff Flake. These other Republican politicians, who are in similar circumstances as Ryan, have used their new-found freedom to criticize President Trump openly and loudly. This could be Ryan's opportunity to stand up for his Republican values.
