President Trump held his first and thus far only formal press conference well over a year ago in February 2017. He's set a record for the fewest solo press conferences held by any American president in the last 50 years. Critics say America's leader must be held accountable and answer questions from the press publicly. But his supporters argue he communicates with the public through Twitter, and that he should not have to answer questions from the "fake news" media. What do you think? 🗣️📰

Trump has held joint press conferences with other leaders, but just one solo conference since he took office. At this point in their presidencies, Barack Obama had held 11 solo press conferences, George W. Bush had held five and Bill Clinton had held 12 according to The Daily Beast.

His critics say he's afraid of direct questions from reporters, and is unable to explain policy or the myriad scandals that currently engulf his administration.

But the president is openly contemptuous of the press, specifically deriding the American press as "fake news" during a joint press conference with the leaders of several Baltic states. He and his supporters see no reason why he should have to answer questions from a biased media.

At his first and thus far only solo press conference, Trump made his loathing of the media clear:

He shouted about Russia, Vladimir Putin, and Russian intelligence. He vented about how unfair and nasty “the media” was to him, but took time to specifically praise friendly outlets such as Fox News....And President Trump revived Candidate Trump’s favorite campaign-rally applause line about how he has “never seen more dishonest media than, frankly, the political media.”

Some historians warn that the tradition of attacking the press and demonizing them as liars and enemies of the people was instrumental in Hitler's rise to power. Trump says he doesn't have to talk to the press because they lie—but he's spent a great deal of his campaign and presidency telling Americans that the press lies to them.

His supporters say he owes the media nothing.

Why be held accountable to a group you've already designated as propagandists and liars?
