Are Democrats held to a higher standard than Republicans?

Ever since Al Franken was forced out of the Senate, Democrats have lamented they are held to a higher standard than Republicans. A child molester ran in Alabama with the full backing of the Republican Party and more than a dozen women have accused President Trump of sexual misconduct. But others feel it is actually Republicans who are held to a double standard—feminist leaders famously defended Bill Clinton against his many allegations of sexual misconduct. What do you think?

After Al Franken was forced to resign over what some felt were less serious allegations, Democrats argued about whether taking the high road was really such a good idea—especially when their Republican counterparts clearly do not. Dahlia Lithwick argues in Slate:

Who knows why the GOP has lost its last ethical moorings? But this is a perfectly transactional moment in governance, and what we get in exchange for being good and moral right now is nothing. I’m not saying we should hit pause on #MeToo, or direct any less fury at sexual predators in their every manifestation. But we should understand that while we know that our good faith and reasonableness are virtues, we currently live in a world where it’s also a handicap.
Unilateral disarmament is tantamount to arming the other side. That may be a trade worth making in some cases. But it’s worth at least acknowledging that this is the current calculus. It’s no longer that when they go low, we get to go high. They are permanently living underground. How long can we afford to keep living in the clouds?

President Trump was caught on tape bragging about assaulting women and grabbing them "by the pussy," yet he was elected president. Roy Moore got the full backing of the Republican Party after allegations of child molestation surfaced. Democrats are expected to act like angels while Republicans are allowed to be monsters.

But are Democrats really held to a higher standard than Republicans? Feminist leaders famously defended Bill Clinton against allegations of sexual misconduct, and his approval ratings actually improved after the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

As far as many are concerned, Bill Clinton got a pass precisely because he was a Democrat and Mika Brzezinski believes Bill Clinton was a precursor to Trump:

"It has been for decades an unbelievable double standard that the Clintons have used and abused where nobody is allowed to go there on this issue and in the age of #Me Too women are supposed to go there."
"My God, he sounded like [President] Trump. He sounded incapable of owning anything."

But others feel comparing Clinton's transgressions to Trump's outright abuse is ridiculous and dangerous. Just another example of whataboutism that is only ever used against Democrats.

But others feel the media's liberal bias means Republicans are hammered while Democrats are given a small slap on the wrist.
