Flag Day commemorates the day the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes back in 1777, but over 200 years later, people are still debating what the flag actually signifies. President Trump thinks Americans who burn the flag should be jailed and have their citizenship revoked. And while flag burning is a protected act of free speech under the Constitution, the majority of Americans believe it should be illegal. What do you think? 🇺🇸 🔥

Flag Day celebrates the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes by the Continental Congress nearly 250 years ago.

The meaning of the flag has taken on special significance in recent years, and some argue any disrespect shown toward the flag is offensive to American servicemembers. President Trump believes people who burn the flag should be jailed and have their citizenship revoked.

Some are celebrating Flag Day by giving a big middle finger to those who wish to take away the right to free speech.

But even though burning the flag has been ruled constitutionally protected free speech, that hasn't stopped legislators from introducing bills to make flag burning illegal—including Hillary Clinton back in 2005.

For many who defend the right to burn the flag, it's about protecting First Amendment rights. Burning the flag may be offensive to many, but protecting free speech means we defend people's rights to say or do offensive, upsetting or distasteful things.
