Clearly, in their hey days Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston had mad range—5 octaves to be exact! It has been long debated which diva has the best voice. Whitney's honorific title is "The Voice," and she's the most awarded female artist in music history. But Mariah's voice has garnered her more #1s than any other SOLO act in music history, and she's one of the few artists who can sing in the whistle register! What do you think? 🎤

Ah! The '90s gave us many anticipated collaborations—Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream," and Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine."

Vocal rivals Whitney and Mariah did the same and combined their vocal powers on "When You Believe," which was featured in the "The Prince of Egypt" soundtrack (1998). The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 1999 Oscars. Now don't get it twisted. Both divas slayed on their own and belong to the "Vocal Trinity" alongside Celine Dion. And ever since the 1990s fans have compared Whitney and Mariah (sorry Celine fans) as competing voices. Listen to this track and tell us who has the more powerful voice?

Mariah showed off the damage she could do vocally on her very first hit, "Vision of Love." The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was the first of 18 #1 hits on U.S. pop charts. She has more #1s than any other SOLO act in music history. The Beatles has her beat though with 21 number #1s.

Mariah has a 5 octave vocal range and can sing in the whistle register!

Ha! Whitney was wowing audiences long before Mariah. She was one of the greatest artists of the '80s, and she broke down barriers for Mariah to exist and crossover over from R&B/soul to pop music. Whitney's official honorific title is "The Voice."

Whitney had a 5 octave vocal range, and utilized her talents on most of her hits and earlier live performances. With 11 #1s and many more hits under her belt she is the most awarded female music artist ever, The song "I Will Always Love You" is perhaps her most iconic vocal performance ever and still a cultural touchstone. Her highly lauded and awarded cover of the song—originally made a hit and written by Dolly Parton in 1973—spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. LIKE WOW!

Here's some of Mariah's best vocal performances.

BONUS! And let's not forget that time Whitney shaded new diva on the block Mariah in a 1990 interview.
